My Story: Building Top Banana USA From the Ground Up

Top Banana USA Printing was built from the shop floor up. I did not start behind a desk or with a business plan; I started by learning the craft and understanding how a real print shop operates day to day in Philadelphia.

Before taking ownership, I worked closely with the previous owner, a seasoned professional screen printer and my personal mentor. Learning directly from him gave me a strong foundation in quality control, consistency, and problem solving. That mentorship still shapes how we approach printing and customer service today.

Finding My Path in Printing and Design

Before I got into printing, I worked in restaurants for most of my early career. Around 10 years ago, I started teaching myself Photoshop and graphic design, making artwork for friends’ bands and local projects. That creative background is still a big part of how we help customers turn an idea into something they can actually sell.

After about a year of doing design work on the side, I started learning production by printing stickers at NextFab, a maker space in Philadelphia. That was my entry point into the world of custom printing and the moment I realized I loved the mix of creativity, production, and problem solving that comes with running a print shop.

While learning the trade, I also ran my own Etsy store and kept building design skills. Balancing creativity with real-world production helped me understand what small brands and small businesses need most: reliable quality, clear pricing, and a print partner who answers the phone.

My path into ownership was intentional and never rushed. I joined Top Banana, trained hands-on, and learned the day-to-day operations of a working shop. In 2021, I purchased the business and stepped into full responsibility for production, customer communication, pricing, and planning.

The first two years, I ran the operation lean while paying off the seller and doing both jobs myself. Since then, I have made major upgrades year after year by reinvesting into equipment, improving workflows, and hiring additional staff. We have continued expanding services for customers who need consistent, professional results at scale.
