What Is Direct-to-Garment Printing?

Direct-to-garment printing, commonly called DTG, is one of the most flexible ways to print custom t-shirts, especially for small runs and highly detailed artwork. If you are looking for full-color prints, photo-quality designs, or no minimum order requirements, DTG printing is often the best option.

At Top Banana USA Printing, DTG is a go-to solution for artists, brands, and businesses that want professional-quality results without committing to large quantities.

How DTG Printing Works

DTG printing works similarly to an inkjet printer, but for apparel. Your artwork is printed directly into the fabric using water-based textile inks. This allows for smooth gradients, fine detail, and unlimited colors in a single print.

When printing on darker garments, we apply a pretreatment and print a white underbase before adding color. This process allows designs to appear bright and detailed on black, navy, charcoal, and other dark-colored garments.

DTG vs Screen Printing

Unlike screen printing, which requires the same setup time whether you print one shirt or one thousand, DTG printing eliminates that preparation entirely. There are no screens, no color limits, and no lengthy setup process.

Because of this, DTG excels at small quantities and short runs. It offers faster turnaround times, consistent print quality, and pricing that makes sense for limited drops, test runs, and one-off designs.

Choosing the Right Garment for DTG

While DTG is incredibly versatile, fabric choice plays a major role in print quality. For the best results, we recommend garments with a 100% cotton face, especially ring-spun cotton. Some blends can work, but colors may appear less vibrant and detail may soften.

This is why we often recommend garments we source ourselves. We print on them every day and know exactly how they perform. You can explore our recommended blanks on our best garments for DTG printing page.
