Screen Printing vs DTG Printing: Which Is Right for Your Project?

There is no single “best” printing method, only the method that is right for your specific project. The ideal choice depends on your quantity, artwork style, turnaround time, and budget.

When Screen Printing Makes Sense

Screen printing is ideal for larger runs with fewer colors. Once the screens are set up, the cost per shirt drops quickly, making it a great option for events, uniforms, merchandise drops, and bulk orders.

Screen printing also produces a slightly thicker ink deposit on the garment, which some people prefer for its durability and classic feel.

When DTG Printing Is the Better Option

DTG printing works differently than screen printing and shines in small runs, fast turnarounds, and highly detailed designs. Full-color artwork is no problem, and printing just one shirt is completely fine.

There are no setup fees, no color limits, and no minimum order requirements. This makes DTG a popular choice for artists, brands testing new designs, and one-off custom prints.

Choosing Based on Quantity

For orders of 24 shirts or fewer, DTG printing often makes the most sense. As quantities increase, screen printing can become more cost-effective when the design is a good fit for the process.

This is where some print shops get it wrong by forcing screen printing when DTG would have been the better option, or pushing DTG when screen printing would save money. The right choice depends on the job, not a one-size-fits-all rule.
