Do I Need White Ink for DTG Printing?
One of the most common questions we get at Top Banana USA Printing is, “Do I need white ink?” The short answer is: sometimes. The long answer depends on the color of your garment and the look you want to achieve.
CMYK Printing on Light Garments
CMYK printing uses only cyan, magenta, yellow, and black ink. This method works best on white or lighter-colored garments. Since there is no white underbase, the ink absorbs directly into the fabric, creating a softer and more vintage look.
CMYK-only printing is also the most budget-friendly direct to garment printing option because it does not require white ink or additional pretreatment.
CMYK + White Printing for Dark Garments
CMYK + White printing is primarily used for darker garments. Before printing, we apply a pretreatment and print a white underbase. This underbase gives the colors a solid foundation, resulting in brighter, sharper prints that stay true to your original artwork.
If you are printing on black, navy, charcoal, or any color darker than light gray, CMYK + White is almost always the best choice for color accuracy and detail.
DTG Care and Washing Recommendations
Pretreated garments require a little extra care. We recommend washing DTG prints before prolonged exposure to sunlight, especially when white ink is used. Sunlight can potentially cause temporary discoloration in ink-based prints, but this risk is eliminated after the first wash.

Which DTG Printing Method Is Right for You?
If your design includes bold colors, gradients, or photographic detail and you are printing on darker garments, CMYK + White is usually the best option. If you prefer a softer, vintage look on white or light-colored tees, CMYK-only printing may be the perfect fit.
At Top Banana USA Printing, we always recommend the printing process that makes your artwork look its best, not just the cheapest option. If you are unsure which method to choose, feel free to send us your artwork and project details, and we will help guide you to the right printing solution.
